Special Session IN02:

Revolutionary Space Exploration Concepts Using Onboard Computing Thursday, 25th May 2006

to be held at

the Spring Joint Assembly of the American Geophysical Union in Baltimore, MD, USA.

Agenda

0830- 1215 Poster Session - BCC Hall C
1400- 1545 Oral Session - BCC 315
1600 - 1900 Breakout meeting - Sheraton Inner Harbour Camden Rooms 1 & 2

This special session is geared towards:
- Scientists and mission PI's interested in new developments in onboard software to select, track, and summarize science data.
- Program managers wanting to understand these new mission paradigms.
- Technologists and mission designers developing new mission concepts leveraging onboard computing.

Session Summary:

Future missions will potentially perform many functions onboard such as: preliminary data analysis, elements of mission planning, and rapid response without ground intervention. This capability, can be used to select onboard the most important science data (such as detecting rare events) as well as retarget to acquire critical data of such transient events. This capability is already in use or development. For example, NASA's New Millennium Program Autonomous Sciencecraft Experiment, currently flying in Earth orbit, controls the EO-1 spacecraft, allowing rapid response to detection of dynamic events (volcanic, flooding, and cryosphere change). Similar capabilities are in advanced development for the Mars Exploration Rovers and Mars Odyssey missions. Future mission concepts leveraging these capailities will also be discussed.

The oral and poster sessions will focus on presentations of recent developments and ongoing mission concept work.

The breakout session will have three foci:
1. approaches for infusion into existing missions,
2. development of new mission concepts leveraging technology,
3. development of science - programmatic - technology partnerships.

Refreshments will be served at the breakout session.
To facilitate logistics, please RVSP by email (chien@aig.jpl.nasa.gov) if you plan to attend the breakout.
